MiNI Lab

The MiNI Lab, led by Dr. Tingrui Pan, is an incubator for exploratory interdisciplinary research bridging nanoengineering and biomedicine. We endeavor to develop novel micro-nanoengineered platforms for contemporary biological applications, to deliver innovative engineered solutions to pressing medical problems, and to educate next-generation bioengineers for future healthcare. Research Interests: interfacial sciences, microfluidics, nanofabrication, nanomaterials,  molecular medicine, bioengineering, bioelectricity, combinatorial methods, neuroscience, oncology, ophthalmology, point-of-care diagnostics, and regenerative medicine.

Our goal is to complement newly made cell culture tools with bioanalytical approaches that allow detecting changes in cell phenotype and genotype in the context of local microenvironment.  As a part of this effort, our laboratory is integrating electrochemical and optical micro-biosensors with cells for detection of extracellular metabolite fluxes (e.g. glucose, hydrogen peroxide, pH).  In addition, we are developing affinity biosensors for local detection of tissue-specific proteins secreted by the cells cultured in the engineered microenvironment.  Our work is highly interdisciplinary involving aspects of microfabrication, surface engineering, biomaterials, biosensors and cell/molecular biology. Research Interests: Cell and Tissue Engineering, Biosensors for Cell Analysis, Point of Care Blood Analysis, Biomicrofluidics, Analytical Chemistry, Biomaterials.
